Drugstore Game Padawan Update: Cheap Dryel

If you're just tuning in, I'm mentoring Nicole in The Drugstore Game. If you've always wanted to play but weren't sure how to get started, follow along with Nicole as she becomes a Drugstore Game Master. You can read all of the posts in this series here, in reverse chronological order.

Yesterday, Nicole came up with a transaction that rolled her $2.50 Walgreens Register Reward into a deal for cheap Dryel, which she wanted. Here's how she did:

Dryel Kit $7.99(On sale from $9.99)
Handy Gloves $.99
Walgreens coupon -$.60
Dryel Manu coupon -$2.00
RR - $2.50

Total out of pocket (OOP) before tax: $3.88
And she received a $3 RR.

Which got me thinking about that $3 RR. Nicole had mentioned to me that she'll be needing toothpaste soon. So, if she can print the $1/1 Thermacare coupon again, along with the 75 cents/1 Colgate MaxWhite toothpaste coupon, I recommend the following transaction:

1 Thermacare $2.49
1 Colgate MaxWhite Toothpaste $2.99
1 Handsaver gloves 99 cents (filler so you can use the RR)
- $1/1 Thermacare
- 75 cents/1 Colgate
- 60 cents in-ad coupon Handsaver
- $3 RR

Pay $1.12 + tax, and get a $2.50 RR for Thermacare and $2 RR for Colgate

If you plan to do this transaction, keep in mind that your filler item can be anything you want, as long as you don't use a manufacturer's coupon on it (because you must have at least as many items as manu coupons, and RR's are considered manu coupons).

Have fun, everyone!

I've been trying to learn how to do the Drugstore Game for some time, and no matter how many blogs I read, I'm still confused. Thanks for this series - maybe I can finally understand it, and this would be a good time to learn, as I was laid off right before Christmas.

My question after catching up with the series is, how do you know how many register rewards or extra care bucks that you will be receiving in return for a transaction? Also, I have no use for the Thermacare, so wouldn't I be spending extra money on something I may not use?

Hi Cathy! Thanks so much for your post and even though you aren't personally helping me as your Padawan, you truly are. I hope you don't mind but I just finished some Wags and Rite Aid shopping tonight and wrote up my first ever blog about it and since I used your guide I mentioned you and your blog. I linked back to you but if you aren't comfortable with that please let me know. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks and let you know. Hope you have a great Sunday! Denise

@Michie - Everything *should* be tagged at the store, although in practice, not everything is. Blogs like Common Sense with Money and I Heart Wags are pretty good about listing the RR deals.

@Denise - It's absolutely no problem, I appreciate the link love!

Thanks. Do you have to sign up to get the register rewards?
