Drugstore Game Padawan Update: Learning to Adapt In Store

If you're just tuning in, I'm mentoring Nicole in The Drugstore Game. If you've always wanted to play but weren't sure how to get started, follow along with Nicole as she becomes a Drugstore Game Master. You can read all of the posts in this series here, in reverse chronological order. Please read my Drugstore Game Primer and Common Sense with Money's FAQ to get an overview of the Drugstore Game and definitions.

Nicole's clearly got a good grasp on The Drugstore Game now. We'd planned a great transaction to get free toilet paper, but her store was out of Glade and Oust. So she made an adjustment on the fly, and came up with the following transaction:

1 Cottenelle 20-roll bonus pack $12.99
1 Soyjoy 6-pack $6
1 L'Oreal Hip Eyeshadow $1.99
Subtotal: $20.98

- $5 off $20 purchase printable coupon (no longer available)
- $1/1 Cottonelle printable coupon (you could also use 50 cents/1 from 12/13 SS)
- $1/1 L'Oreal Eye Product printable coupon
- $6 ECB

Paid: $7.98 + tax
Received: $6 ECB for Soyjoy, $4 ECB for Cottenelle

Nicole said she was thinking of trying a different CVS store to see if it's better stocked. I strongly encouraged her to do so - in my area, there's one high-traffic store that does a remarkable job of keeping "hot" items in stock. Nicole's husband is loving the Soyjoy, so I recommended the following transaction if she can find Oust in stock:

1 Soyjoy $6
2 Oust $3.99 x 2
1 Dawn Hand Renewal 96 cents
Subtotal: $14.94

- $3.99 B1G1 Oust from 1/3 SS
- 50 cents/1 Dawn Hand Renewal from 12/27 or 1/17 P&G
- $6 ECB + $4 ECB

Pay 45 cents + tax
Receive $6 ECB for Soyjoy + $6 ECB for Oust

I'm confident that even if her store isn't fully stocked, Nicole will be able to adjust her transaction to get what she needs, even if she's just "exchanging" one $6 ECB for a box of Soyjoy and another $6 ECB. But hopefully the new store she's going to will be well-stocked.
