Review & Giveaway: Exergen TemporalScanner

I've been intrigued by the Exergen TemporalScanner for a while now, so I jumped at the chance when the folks at Exergen offered to send me one to try out. You may have seen these before – they're the handy dandy forehead thermometers that are super easy to use, fast and painless. If you've had to take a child's temperature before, you know how important those characteristics are. Let me just say that I've taken one rectal temperature in my life, and I'm never doing it again.

My kids have been pretty good with the thermometer under the arm, but it's not the easiest thing in the world to do. First, their shirt gets in the way. Especially in the winter, when they're wearing multiple layers and you don't want to disrobe them to take their temperature. Second, placement can be tricky. Not to mention keeping the thermometer in position until it beeps.

The Exergen is incredibly easy to use: Just place the thermometer in the center of the forehead, press the power button, and slide it across the forehead to the right or left. The scanner works by using an infrared sensor to register heat emitted from the skin over the temporal artery.

The big question I had about the Exergen was accuracy. The company claims that the scanner is the most accurate way of measuring temperature, but I'd heard that it's easy to get an incorrect reading unless you use the thermometer exactly as directed. So I conducted a very unscientific comparison by using the Exergen, and then taking an underarm temp with our regular digital thermometer. There was a couple of degrees difference, but I concluded that the Exergen had to be the accurate temperature because the underarm temp was way too low. I tested both methods multiple times to check but my results were consistent. That alone would have been enough to convince me, but I also discovered that the boys' preschool teachers use Exergen scanners to check the kids' temperatures when they suspect a fever. I noticed they take the temperature twice - once to the left, and once to the right. If it's good enough for them, it's definitely good enough for me.

The Exergen web site has instructions on how to get a $5 mail in rebate (scroll down to the bottom of the page). But maybe you can win one!

Just stopping by to say that we bought this scanner about 4 weeks ago. It made me feel a lot better about its accuracy when I saw the nurse at my pediatrician's office using this.
We decided to get it because you can never sanitize a thermometer enough to take second or thrid child's temp. PLUS let's not even get about how with a baby you really need to label a thermometer used to take anal temps.
Anyway, best $39 ever spent. I am entering your giveaway though jut in case I need a replacement, lol
