Review & Giveaway: Joe's Crab Shack

I'd never heard of Joe's Crab Shack before the folks there asked me if I wanted to try their food. They sent me a $25 gift card and the boys and I headed down to the one in Redondo Beach. That location is right on the water, with a fabulous outdoor seating area that has a view of the ocean. There's also a beach park just down the street, so you can relax on the sand before or after your meal.

Joe's Crab Shack has a great kid's menu - in addition to standard kid fare like mac & cheese and chicken tenders, they also have shrimp (grilled or popcorn) and fish sticks (which looked freshly battered and fried). If you have a really adventurous child, they might go for the snow crab or even the steampot (snow crab, shrimp and sausage). The kids' food got a thumbs up from both boys.

There are many reasonably-priced items on the adult menu (the crab cake sliders sounded particularly delicious), but I have to admit to a little sticker shock at the price of the "specialty" items like the crab buckets and steampots. Maybe I just haven't been eating out enough, but most were well over $20 each. Despite the cost, I figured that I might as well get the full experience, and ordered crab legs. And there was a lot of food, enough for a large man and way too much for me. The crab was delicious, though I found the steamed potato to be overly mushy.

I loved the little touches, like the trash bucket built into the table for discarded shells. The roll of paper towels in lieu of napkins may be a little, er, rustic, but it is utterly practical. And I always appreciate places that provide crayons and activity place mats for the kids.

Joe's Crab Shack is in that weird category of not being fine dining by any means, but being too expensive for a quick and casual dinner. If you like seafood, and especially if you like getting your hands dirty while eating it (which I definitely do), I highly recommend it as an "affordable splurge."

The folks at Joe's Crab Shack want to make it more affordable for two lucky CFO readers, who will each win a $25 Joe's Crab Shack gift card.
