Midday Coffee: In search of a new slow cooker?

I've had my beloved West Bend slow cooker for over five years now (I reviewed it back in July 2005!) but the knob on the lid just broke off. The base of the knob is still screwed in, so I can still use my slow cooker, but I have to use an oven mitt to grab the side of the lid in order to lift it off when it's hot. It's something of a safety issue, so although I'm not in a huge rush, I would eventually like to get the lid fixed or get a new slow cooker. I checked with West Bend and they don't have any replacement parts available, though the customer service rep suggested I see if a hardware store might have a replacement handle that fits. I might try that, but I'm afraid that the base of the know won't go back in if we remove it to see if a new handle fits.

I'm sorely tempted to get this 4-quart West Bend slow cooker,(it's only $17.96!) but I'm thinking that as the boys get bigger, I'm going to want a 6-quart crock. Hopefully if I'm patient, the right deal will just fall into my lap! Growing Up Gabel has a recipe she highly recommends for Pizza Puffs, which sound like they'll be perfect for a school lunch and something I can keep in the freezer.

Creative-Type Dad made me laugh out loud with his pie chart of how his daughter's brain changed upon entering kindergarten.

I have been making the same noodle kugel recipe for years (it's like a bread pudding, but with egg noodles instead of bread). But next time I'm going to try Jane4girls' recipe, which sounds a little simpler and richer, and uses ingredients I am more likely to have on hand.

The same thing happened to my crock pot lid. We found a nice door pull knob (it's pink!) and screwed it on with a silicone spacer so it wouldn't crack the glass. Now on of the handles on the side is broken, but I'm trying to stretch it as long as I can. When I have to replace it I want to get a programmable one, so that I can assemble ingredients first thing in the morning and not have to worry about starting it.

Yeah, I've been using mine without a handle for a good year now. I just hate to get rid of something that works just fine!

I saw some new cute patterned West Bend slow cookers available only at Target!

I love my 6-quart Cuisinart slow cooker! "Santa" gave it to me and my fiance for Christmas last year. We live with 3 other people and watch a lot of football, so I love that I can make enough stew for everyone in one go (though I'll probably need another one if we're going to have our at-home tailgate this Sunday!). I completely agree that with your kids growing up it'll be worth it to get a bigger cooker - and you can also make extra and freeze leftovers!

I also think this is a great chance to personalize your current one - get a cute drawer pull (like something from anthropologie) and use that instead!

@LH - That's a great idea, I'll have to look for a knob and spacer, thanks!

@Camille - I'm glad I'm not the only one, thanks to you and LH! Reader Teri reminded me about the Hamilton Beach cooker with different size crocks, so I'm going to keep an eye out for sales during the holidays - it gets good reviews at Amazon.

@Jess - I've borrowed my mother-in-law's slow cooker when cooking for a crowd. It's such a great way to entertain. Have fun!
